Attorney General Josh Stein Releases Statement on Rental Housing Amid COVID-19

For Immediate Release:
Friday, May 1, 2020

(RALEIGH) As North Carolinians’ May rent due date approaches, Attorney General Josh Stein released the following statement. A video of his statement is also available here.

“People across our state are struggling financially through no fault of their own as a result of the coronavirus. More than 900,000 North Carolinians have lost their jobs in a matter of just a few weeks. Many people don’t have enough money to pay their rent.

“I want to thank the many landlords who are working with their distressed tenants and are acting responsibly during this time of crisis. I urge all landlords around the state to do the same. Please give your tenants some breathing room so they can get back on their feet. And work with them to create a payment plan so they can reasonably meet their obligation to you. In no event should you evict any tenant in violation of the law.

“I urge tenants to take the initiative to reach out to your landlord and ask for help if you are experiencing financial hardship. If you are not, by continuing to pay your rent on time, you will provide landlords the cash flow they need to help others who can’t afford to pay right now.

“We are in unprecedented and uncertain times. By each of us doing the right thing, we can help our neighbors in need, and together we can emerge from this crisis safer and stronger.”
