Attorney General Josh Stein Announces Guilty Plea in Sexual Battery, Kidnapping, and Burglary Case

Release date: 12/20/2018

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today announced that Tyrell Alexander, of Durham, has pled guilty to one count of First Degree Kidnapping, one count of Second Degree Kidnapping, one count of Sexual Battery, one count of First Degree Burglary, and one count of Second Degree Kidnapping for two home invasions on Oct. 28, 2017 and Jan. 29, 2018. After appearing in Durham County Superior Court, Alexander received a sentence of 171-242 months and will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

“The facts of these cases are extremely disturbing,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “My office will continue our work to help bring justice to victims.”

During each incident, Alexander broke into a home where a female lived alone and attempted to sexually assault them. In both cases, the victims fought back and he fled the scene. The Jan. 29 incident involved Alexander putting a pillowcase over the head of a 78-year-old Durham resident and threatening her with a knife. Durham County Sheriff’s Office and Durham Police Department investigations uncovered bedding that matched the pillowcase and knives that matched the one left in the victim’s yard, which led to the defendant’s arrest.

The North Carolina Department of Justice’s Special Prosecutions Section prosecuted this case.
